This game was released in 1998 and is both a First Person Shooter as well as a Real Time Strategy game.

I believe it was called Battleworld.. or Battlezone.. it sounds vaguely familiar, if i remember correctly i upgrade my gfx card to a riva tnt2 for this game.. if its the one i'm thinking of...

Battle Zone is what the answer is and it had a sequal that was pretty bad

No Woosle had it before me, and I don't think I could have I was 8 when I played it. I never got to the stage where you got to build anything.
