Sucker Punch

Postby computer_man20037 » Mon Mar 28, 2011 10:09 am

So I was curious who went and saw Sucker Punch if they liked it or not. I went to see it Friday night with a friend and after the movie I asked my friend to see what he thought and told me he thought it was ok. I have to say I thought it was interesting but a weird movie in general and the music was just to loud at times where I could barely hear anything else.

I guess I would say do you recommend this movie to other friends or family members?

I told my other friends to wait for it to come out to rent I didn't think they would care for it that much and save them a few bucks by renting the movie.

My rating for the movie would be 3 out of 4 stars:

I did like 2ply's comment in the chat box about the trailer:

well... i waited till 620 before looking at the preview for the movie... when i realized what it was i decided internet porn was the better alternative

edit - I forgot to mention to the people who did see the movie what games do you think... if you think were shown in the movie?

I was thinking that possibly Wolfenstien was one or possibly could have been Kill Zone from the way they looked but wasn't sure.

i went to see it with tony on saturday. i liked it, but it might be because i was expecting VERY little from seeing the trailer for it. i came in expecting it to be a loosely threaded together amalgamation of every corny action/scifi movie gimmick ever imagined. i was pleasantly surprised by a number of things:

1 - 0 nudity. again, definitely not my expectation. lets be clear: i love females. however anymore nudity in film is just used for its own sake and nothing more. so its always nice to see a movie that you think is going to have to stoop to very base appeal, that actually does not.

2 - 3 obscenities total (that i can remember) and all by one character (consistent with his character). big surprise here. again, i expected most of the dialogue to sound a lot like one of our lan parties. again, same pleasant surprise that they wrote the same level of intensity into the characters lines without having to go the cheap route with it.

3 - style/music. all of the incredibly strange/fantastical sequences made me feel like i was watching a string of music videos almost.

4 - strong, clear message of victory...without the story necessarily having to come to the happy storybook ending. this was nice because frankly storybook endings seem cheap and fake (har har i know). the other reason this stood out to me was that it wasnt just thrown in as an afterthought, but permeated the entire story and every scene.

5 - frankly it was just kinda fun following 3 different levels of reality in the same story and thinking about how each layer related to the events of reality (or the other levels of reality) as they were happening.

6 - tongue in cheek humor - this was evident a number of times throughout the movie to kind of admit that the writers and artists involved understood that they couldnt take this project too seriously. the happy bunny face painted on ambers mech (in the middle of WW1 against steam powered undead german soldiers) was a perfect example of it.

i did notice some of the WW1 germans did look like killzone 3's cover art. the goblins/orcs fromt he dragon scene looked a lot the LotR ones. the demon samurai warriors stirred up some familiarity in my mind, but i cant put my finger on it specifically.

Nice review, paul. The wife and I both want to see it, but we don't even try to get to the theater anymore. Definitely will have it added to our netflix queue, though.

I posted in the shoutbox on the side, but I figured I should toss a few comments in here for when that scrolls off the page.

1) The movie is, at it's core, about a girl who loses her mother then tries to defend her sister from being attacked by her step-father, shoots and kills her sister on accident, then gets sent to a mental institution to be lobotomized. The bulk of the movie describes her attempt to escape before this happens.

2) The movie has three "realities": the real world, meta-reality, and meta-meta-reality (a.k.a. fantasy). All three realities describe things that are happening in the real world. At no point are you brought on a tangent without purpose--you are ALWAYS watching the "real" storyline, even if it's made glamorous with futuristic animation or a few Germans attempting to kill the characters.

3) As Paul intimated there is very little swearing and no nudity, which gives it a PG-13 rating. This was brought up to me by a friend about a week ago. What the producers and editing team had to do was remove nearly all references to blood from the movie in order to achieve the PG-13 rating. I don't know how "everything else" got through while the movie retained it, but if you expect anyone under the age of 12 or 13 to even understand what they're watching you're fooling yourself. This movie is for adults, and an R rating would've been far more appropriate.

4) The humor was quite subtle throughout the film. I was more surprised at how well the first meta-reality described what's really happening in the "real world". You'll be glad they didn't show the "real world" version, as I'm sure many parts of it would've been quite disgusting.

I'd be glad to see the movie again, especially now that I know what happens, so I can see if I can pick up other subtle things that were left in the final cut. I'm also interested to see what will come out if they release a 2-disc DVD/Blu-Ray set with extras, as the extras should be interesting (especially ones they did in the meta-meta/fantasy which ended up on the cutting room floor.)
